Imaging and Radiology
Advanced imaging services at Foothill Regional Medical Center give our physicians the ability to look inside the human body to diagnose, monitor, or treat a variety of medical conditions. Our highly trained, certified radiologists and technicians have the expertise, equipment and knowledge to provide our patients with the answers they’re looking for. From ultrasounds to CT scans, the department has advanced imaging technology at their fingertips for diagnosis and treatment.
In addition, our facility has been awarded special recognition by the American College of Radiology as an Image Gently® supporter. This seal indicated a facility accredited in pediatric CT imaging and committed to imaging pediatric patients with an appropriate dose of radiation.
We offer a full range of routine and complex radiology services for the care of our patients, including the following:
- CT Scans – Computerized tomography (CT) scans allow our physicians to non-invasively pinpoint the location of a disease. Our state-of-the-art CT scanner uses a series of X-ray images taken from different angles to create detailed pictures of organs, bones, and other tissues. These images show the presence of tumors, blood clots, excess fluid, or infection.
- Ultrasound – Our ultrasound systems use high-frequency sound waves to look inside the body in real time. There is no risk of radiation exposure with ultrasound imaging. It can safely visualize the fetus in pregnancy, the heart during echocardiogram, abdominal tissues and organs, and other areas of the body.
- MRI Scans – Our radiologists have a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner at their disposal to diagnose a variety of conditions, from brain trauma like bleeding or swelling to tumors and torn ligaments. Unlike a CT scan, MRI scans do not involve harmful radiation. It uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create details pictures of tissues, organs, and other structures inside the body.
- Nuclear Medicine – An imaging technique that uses a special dye containing radioactive tracers to reveal how the body is functioning. Patients are given a small amount of this dye through an IV or ingestion, where it then collects in certain organs and tissues. These areas become highlighted in the subsequent images, which can help our physicians make a better diagnosis.
- Fluoroscopy – Fluoroscopy can be thought of as X-ray “movie” that can visualize real-time movement inside the body. In a procedure called barium X-rays, fluoroscopy shows the movement of the intestines as a contrast agent moves through them. In cardiac catheterization, fluoroscopy allows our doctors to see blood flowing through the coronary arteries and can detect any blockages. Other procedures that involve fluoroscopy include arthrography to observe joints, IV catheter insertion, and lumbar puncture.
The radiology department is staffed 24 hours a day.
